Celebrating Everyday Spirituality

The Institution of the Holy Eucharist

We gathered in the spacious and furnished Upper Room that Peter and John found just as the Master directed them. The smell of roasted lamb increased the hunger of the disciples and a few other invited guests. Earlier I heard my Son say, “I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” The intensity of his words added conviction to what he predicted about fulfillment in the reign of God. Past events of the Chosen People seemed to crescendo to fulfillment as we partook of the lamb, the bitter herbs, the bread. The familiar words of the Haggadah we could have recited by heart had not Jesus added new words, mystifying words, words filled with God’s Spirit. Breaking a loaf and passing it, Jesus said, “My Body for you.” Words too deep to understand, but words we believed. Then at the third of the four cups of wine, Jesus looked around the table at each one of us, an expression on his faced that we had witnessed before at the raising of Lazarus, on Tabor, at the woman extravagantly bathing his feet with perform. And now again, our eyes riveted on the cup of wine he held. “My Blood for you.” For several minutes silence, then someone intoned a song of praise, and we walked out to the Mount of Olives.
