When I think of this mystery, I picture my brother holding his newly-adopted son Christopher. My brother looked so proud to be carrying his son, showing him off, I suppose. Anna and Simeon noticed a similar facial expression on Joseph—pride, joy, gratitude for what the Almighty could do. Mary demurely walked by Joseph’s side as they came to consecrate their Son to the Lord and offer sacrifice. At that very moment, Simeon realized his waiting was over. The Holy Spirit inspired him to know “This Baby is the Anointed of the Lord.” Mary and Joseph were amazed at the fervor and conviction of Simeon’s declaration: “This Baby is the glory of your people Israel!” Yet seconds later, a sword pierced Mary’s heart: “Your Son will be opposed.” Unimaginable his parents’ thoughts: “How? This little baby placed in Simeon’s arms as he blessed God, weren’t there words of joy? Once again as at the Annunciation Mary may have asked in her heart “How can this be?”
“Coming on the scene at this moment, Anna gave thanks to God.” Despite her eight-four years, she constantly worshiped in the temple, fasted, and prayed. Luke claims she talked about the Child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. She the prophetess became the evangelizer.

I have heard or read often that the dads cry when they see their precious child and hold him/her the first time. Yes, I can imagine Joseph praising God his whole life for the privilege of raising Jesus.
I like that you remind us to read Scripture as if we do not know the outcomes.
Often think of the difficulty of this joyous event followed by “a sword shall pierce”. Mary never gave up. And I wonder what Joseph must have thought.
