“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” These are the wise words of Winston Churchill. Perhaps you’re lying in a hammock while sipping your favorite beverage on a day perfectly choreographed by God. Do you find yourself saying “This is the life!” or “This is really living!” The feeling can quickly end, however, with an empty glass or rain cloud. How different the feeling that comes with self-sacrifice! Seems ironic, doesn’t it, when we feel rejuvenated after mowing a lawn for a neighbor, visiting the lady who never gets visitors, repairing damage after a storm? Isn’t it in giving that we make our life? We’re encouraged to give until it hurts. Maybe we should say instead “Give to make your life.”
