In her book Firstlight Sue Monk Kidd claims “All personal theology should begin with the words: ‘Let me tell you a story.’” Jesus used this technique, his parables explaining deep truths. Lately we Sisters have been communicating via Zoom to prepare for a convocation this summer. Having read assigned articles and preparing responses to discussion questions, we share our thoughts on screens. The discussions lead to stories that illustrate our point, namely, to fulfill Christ’s mission. And that’s where the stories surface. We are impressed by the legal work done for migrants, the care extended to students and neighbors, the wisdom to know we can’t do it alone, the methods to be on mission to help people live life to the full (Jn. 10:10). The stories brim with the joyous blessed events and mundane daily stuff that allow us to be the love of God for others.
We hear sorrow, and we all deepen our compassion. We hear the good work being done, and we all are inspired. We listen to a Sister’s inquiry, and we all start wondering “What if?” Behind the words, we hear the Sister’s personal theology. Who is God for her? How does she listen for God’s will? What is your story? How does it reflect your theology? Tell me about it.
