Celebrating Everyday Spirituality

Accidentally Speaking

kbbrixDuring the ceremony when St. Brigid (500 A.D.) was to become an abbess, the bishop accidentally used the prayers for an ordination of a bishop. Back in June a presider at Mass intended to give a Father’s Day blessing, but accidentally turned to a page with a blessing for catechists. Oops!  Psychologists tell us that sometimes what we say accidentally is what we really mean unconsciously. When praying the Office aloud in community, instead of saying, “When I lie down, I fall peacefully asleep,” a Sister said, “When I fall down, I lie peacefully asleep.” Now that’s an accident I wouldn’t mind!

  1. Sometimes the things we do in the 24 hours God grants us are exhausting! Sometimes when I lay down, I too fall onto the mattress and with seconds I am asleep and in the morning rested to do yet again what God has planned. When I can stay in the God plan mode, it is always peaceful sleep, when I am in Kathy planned mode, I usually need to do an amendment first to God for thinking I had a better plan then to whoever it was I stepped on. It could be me, it could be another, yet amend I must for to not would mean another bad day, I can’t have that. Thank you for sharing the peace of sleep for servants who are willing and ready to do God’s will.

  2. Oh happy faults! They make us smile and bring a bit of laughter and peace to the soul. Thank you, Sister Valerie.

We are in the “Good Shepherd Season” of the Church year. Often we read about sheep going through gates, grazing in pastures, hearing the voice of the leader, even following the shepherd. Homilists instruct us to be like sheep. Pope Francis exhorted us to smell like sheep. Too often, though

When Pope Leo XIV woke up this morning, what were his first thoughts? “Oh, that was an interesting conclave.” Then with more consciousness, “Oh, I’m the Pope.” Because he knows several languages, were his waking thoughts in English, Italian, or Spanish? Perhaps our waking thoughts were also on the Pope.
