Celebrating Everyday Spirituality

A Marian Pause

Yesterday touched on a treasured tradition here at our Provincial Center. Several of our Sisters gathered after Mass with Father Tom Leyland for the blessing of a special Marian Grotto on the fourth floor porch.  This so reminds me of the many May Altars I experienced as a child in my home, my classroom and in my parish church.

At times, individuals express concern that we are focusing too much attention on Mary and not enough on Jesus. It is certainly possible to get caught up in the rituals or devotions, but if our love for Mary is sincere we have no cause to be concerned.  Mary will never draw us to herself without taking us to the heart of her Son, Jesus.  St. Maximilian Kolbe said, “Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.”

I, for one, know I need the special love and protection of a devoted Mother.  Mary, our Mother, pray for us.

What is your favorite memory of devotion to Mary?

  1. I have lost touch with two cousins that I believe joined the ND Order around 1956 or so. I don’t know if they are still Sisters or not. If possible I would like to find them. One is Polly Schemenauer, my husband David’s cousin and the other is younger, Mary Rose Lochotski. David and I will celebrate our 56th wedding anniversary tomorrow and I would love to give him the gift of information about his cousin. We have six children and ten grands, Yea! We live in St Louis, MO and the kids are scattered from New Mexico to Florida. We both went to Central Catholic and my Dad was Coach Pat McCarty. David went to St Louis grade school and I went to St Charles. I’m looking forward to reading this blog for inspiration, thanks Patty

We are in the “Good Shepherd Season” of the Church year. Often we read about sheep going through gates, grazing in pastures, hearing the voice of the leader, even following the shepherd. Homilists instruct us to be like sheep. Pope Francis exhorted us to smell like sheep. Too often, though

When Pope Leo XIV woke up this morning, what were his first thoughts? “Oh, that was an interesting conclave.” Then with more consciousness, “Oh, I’m the Pope.” Because he knows several languages, were his waking thoughts in English, Italian, or Spanish? Perhaps our waking thoughts were also on the Pope.
