The Baptism of Our Lord

When I reflect on the First Luminous Mystery, the Baptism of Our Lord, I think of commitment. Here was Jesus perhaps saying to his Mother Mary “It’s time. My Father is asking me to do His work. Mom, pray that I always follow the will of my Father. And pray that I find good disciples.” Mary knew the hour of his departure was coming. For the past several weeks Jesus had completed furniture orders, collected fees, and handed the money to his mother. Noticing a few needed repairs on their house, Jesus took care of those, hoping nothing would worry his mother. But now he notes a worried furrow on his mom’s forehead, along with a hug that showed her confidence in Him. A kiss and a heartfelt “shalom” exchanged, Jesus turned in the direction that the Spirit of God led him–to the Jordan River where he heard the news his cousin was baptizing. Jesus grinned as he imagined John the Baptizer being delighted to see his cousin. As he walked along, Jesus imagined the scene: the delight on his cousin’s face, the step back in deference to one “mightier than I,” and the plunge that marked the beginning of totally good news. The people on the shore, “full of anticipation, wondered in their hearts,” (Lk. 3:15) that the Messiah was surely near.

  1. Neat reflection! I love the part about Jesus’ making sure everything was in order before He left. Mother Mary is hardly seen in Season 5 of THE CHOSEN. I am wondering how she will be portrayed in Season 6.

Perhaps Mary and Joseph wondered what Jesus’ first words would be. One might expect the Hebrew words equivalent to “mama” and “dada.” Either word would have made his parents proud. The word for “father” (abba) would have deep meaning, since it would reflect divine sonship—although that would take maturity, a
