The term “servant leadership” has become a popular phrase. As people realize that good leaders must also be servants, our perception of those in authority moves in that direction. Perhaps the idea of “servant leadership” led to choosing recent popes. Within the next couple weeks, it may be useful in selecting our next provincial for our USA province called “Immaculate Conception.” The Blessed Virgin exemplifies servant leadership. Though humble and unassuming, she took charge of the situation by ordering the servants at the wedding feast to “do whatever He [Jesus] tells you.” Her Magnificat has been a tribute to those who do the right and a rebuke of the mighty, as God “looked upon his servant in her lowliness.” As sisters of Notre Dame, Our Lady, I pray that that we have her courage in whatever situation we lead. Vatican II spoke of “sensus fidelium,” and the “sense of the faithful” faces us now as we consider our next leaders. In situations calling for leadership and its attendant authority our sisters discern and articulate what each individual and what the community as a whole is called to do: the mission and vision of Jesus Christ. No matter which sisters are chosen, the “sensus” of our sisters is forward-looking, ready “to do whatever He tells [us].” Our founding sisters, Sister Maria Aloysia and Sister Maria Ignatia Kuhling, possessed the “sensus” of God’s goodness and provident care. Their charism can be traced to our sisters today around the world. Our vow formula professes our belief in the “support of my sisters.” We are in this together. We are community. We believe that our future leaders will be “servant leaders” through Mary’s intercession.
