Creation and the Incarnation of Jesus Christ seem like two separate events, but they form one process of God’s self-giving and self-expression. The process begins with “Let there be light!” The moment of the Big Bang starts the whole universe, which is full of Christ. The “body” of the universe is the Body of Christ. Christ is the sacrament of Gods’ love in the universe, the noblest perfection of the universe, its goal and center. But 13.7 billion years will pass before we humans begin to grasp the meaning.
Sometimes I think God would have burst if the divinely spoken words “Let there be light!” had not started the evolving universe. What would God have done with all that creativity and power and wisdom and eagerness to love and love and love? Could God have held it in? Apparently not, because within fractions of seconds the universe was forming. “The epic of evolution may be the greatest story ever told” (Ilia Delio), but every chapter gets better. There’s always more to behold. Creation becomes Christ’s body. Christ is the union of all created reality in the love of God. Creative evolution is God expressing the God self. The whole evolutionary process is incarnational, using cosmic dust and Mary’s womb to form Jesus’ body. God created the universe so that God could become one of us. Evolution is God’s plan for birthing the Christ. “Let there be light” was the first Christmas carol.
