One task today for me is to continue taking down and packing Christmas decorations. The season is about to end, and the official Ordinary Time begins. But that does not mean Christmas is over. Robert Taft, S.J., whom I was privileged to have as an instructor of the Church Year, was adamant that “every day is everything.” Yes, every day is Christmas, every day is Easter, every day is everything. Every day is “today,” the eternal Now, the ever-present reality of Christ. When I explain this to others, I use the image of the Church Year as a kaleidoscope. All the colored pieces of the Church year are inside the kaleidoscope, and they represent the whole life of Christ. With each new day we turn the kaleidoscope a bit. Patterns and colors show the whole life of Christ, but there’s a change in focus, and we see a special dimension that our limited minds can appreciate. Every day we ritualize the whole life of Christ in the Mass, while giving a bit more focus on some aspect of Christ: sermons, miracles, birth, death, or how saints lived the life of Christ. Every day is everything. While packing away the statues from the Bethlehem stable, don’t bid a fond farewell. Wake up to a new day that celebrates everything. And tomorrow will be Christmas once again.
